Salma Hayek has officially entered a new decade — and the Mexican-born actress, producer and entrepreneur is celebrating 60 with a Hollywood legacy few performers can match.
Hayek marked her 60th birthday on September 2, four decades after beginning her career in Mexico and eventually making the difficult leap to Hollywood at a time when leading roles for Latina actresses were scarce.
Born in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Hayek became a television star in Mexico before heading to Los Angeles. Her breakthrough came opposite Antonio Banderas in Robert Rodriguez’s 1995 action film Desperado, helping establish her as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable Latina stars.
But Hayek’s defining project would come several years later with Frida. She produced and starred in the 2002 biopic of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and becoming the first Mexican-born actress nominated in that category.
Her résumé has since stretched from From Dusk Till Dawn and Fools Rush In to Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Grown Ups, House of Gucci, Marvel’s Eternals and Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
Behind the camera, Hayek has also been a significant force. Her producing credits include ABC’s Ugly Betty, the American adaptation of the Colombian phenomenon Yo soy Betty, la fea. The series became a landmark moment for Latino representation on U.S. network television.
At 60, Hayek remains one of the rare Latina performers whose career has crossed generations, languages and genres — while maintaining an unmistakably Mexican identity.
For Hollywood Latino, her milestone is bigger than a birthday. Hayek arrived in Hollywood when opportunities for Latina actresses were dramatically narrower, then helped push open doors as both an actress and producer.
