Penélope Cruz Commands TIFF Spotlight as Javier Bardem Joins Her in Toronto
TORONTO — Penélope Cruz is having a major week at the Toronto International Film Festival, arriving at TIFF with two films, a major career honor and husband Javier Bardem also making waves in Toronto.
The Oscar-winning Spanish actress is at the festival with Bunker, Florian Zeller’s psychological drama in which she stars opposite Bardem, as well as La Bola Negra, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi.
The two projects give Cruz an especially strong presence at this year’s festival and once again showcase a career that has moved effortlessly between Hollywood, Spanish cinema and major international productions.
Cruz’s week became even more significant when she received the TIFF Special Tribute Award, recognizing a career that has spanned more than three decades.
She remains one of the most successful Spanish actors to cross into Hollywood, becoming the first Spanish actress to win an Academy Award with her supporting performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. At the same time, Cruz has remained closely connected to Spanish cinema, particularly through her celebrated collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar.
And TIFF 2026 has become something of a family affair.
Javier Bardem is also in Toronto, with two films represented at the festival. In addition to starring alongside Cruz in Bunker, Bardem appears in Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved (El ser querido).
Away from the premieres and red carpets, Cruz and Bardem were also among the guests at a Sony Pictures Classics dinner at Morton’s The Steakhouse in Toronto’s swanky Yorkville neighborhood, one of the city’s traditional TIFF gathering spots during festival week.
The appearance of Cruz and Bardem at the same festival adds considerable star power to TIFF. Both are Academy Award winners who have built international careers while continuing to work regularly in European and Spanish productions.
The couple have also been selective about sharing the screen, making their reunion in Bunker one of the more intriguing elements of their Toronto appearances.
For Cruz, the week represents another milestone in an already remarkable international career: two films at TIFF, a major festival tribute and Bardem sharing the Toronto spotlight.
