Rubén Blades To Receive Billboard Icon Award At 2026 Latin Music Awards In Miami
MIAMI — Latin music legend Rubén Blades will be honored with the Billboard Icon Award at the 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards, recognizing a career that has spanned more than five decades and helped redefine salsa for audiences around the world.
The Panamanian singer, songwriter and musician will receive the honor during the October 22 ceremony at Miami’s James L. Knight Center, airing live at 8 p.m. ET on Telemundo and Peacock.
But Blades’ remarkable career extends well beyond music. He has also built one of the most extensive Hollywood résumés of any Latin music star, working alongside some of the biggest names in film.
Blades appeared opposite Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in Safe House and starred alongside Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramírez and John Turturro in the Roberto Durán biopic Hands of Stone.
His film credits also include Once Upon a Time in Mexico, alongside Antonio Banderas, Johnny Depp and Salma Hayek; The Counselor, whose ensemble included Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and Michael Fassbender; Predator 2 with Danny Glover; The Devil’s Own with Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt; and The Two Jakes, directed by and starring Jack Nicholson.
On television, Blades became familiar to a new generation of viewers through his long-running role as Daniel Salazar on AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, appearing throughout the series from 2015 through its final season in 2023. His acting work has also brought him multiple Emmy nominations.
The Icon Award recognizes artists whose careers have maintained lasting relevance while achieving significant artistic and commercial impact.
Blades emerged as a major figure in New York’s 1970s salsa movement, bringing a distinctive storytelling approach to the genre while incorporating social commentary and influences extending beyond traditional salsa.
Blades will have an additional presence in Miami during Billboard Latin Music Week, running October 19-22, ahead of the awards ceremony.
The recognition adds another chapter to an unusually diverse career — salsa icon, songwriter, actor, lawyer and former Panamanian government minister — that has made Blades one of Latin culture’s most enduring international figures.
