The chef and humanitarian has announced a $1 million commitment to Colombia, aimed at helping small food businesses reopen following the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the country earlier this month.

“Today I’m announcing 1 million dollars for Colombia, to help small food businesses reopen,” Andrés wrote on social media, adding that World Central Kitchen will work with his Longer Tables Fund to determine where the money can have the greatest short-term impact.

The initiative goes beyond emergency meals, targeting restaurants and other local food operators whose livelihoods have been disrupted by the disaster — a strategy consistent with Andrés’ long-running approach of using local kitchens, chefs and suppliers to help communities recover.

World Central Kitchen has already been active in Colombia this year. Following severe flooding in Córdoba, the organization mounted a Colombian-led response that ultimately distributed the equivalent of more than 528,000 meals while supporting community kitchens and local volunteers.

For Andrés, the latest $1 million commitment represents another rapid response from an organization that has turned the kitchen into a global humanitarian operation.
