VENICE — Ricky Martin and Gael García Bernal delivered a major dose of Latino star power at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival with Hombre al agua, the new Spanish-language feature directed, co-written and starring García Bernal.

The film, presented in Venice’s Spotlight section, follows a Cuban lifeguard whose life changes after rescuing a wealthy Mexican businessman from drowning, opening a story that examines class, privilege and power.

Martin appears in the film and also serves as a producer, marking a significant moment for the Puerto Rican superstar, who has steadily expanded his screen career beyond music with roles in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and Palm Royale.

The international cast also includes Esmeralda Pimentel, Manuel García Rulfo, Débora Nascimento, Natalia Oreiro and Jorge Salinas.

For García Bernal, Hombre al agua continues his evolution from internationally acclaimed actor to filmmaker, following his previous directing credits Déficit and Chicuarotes.

Martin and García Bernal’s Venice appearance also offered a highly visible showcase for Latin American talent at one of cinema’s most prestigious international festivals — bringing Puerto Rican and Mexican star power together on the Lido.
