Michael Peña & Anthony Ramos To Star In ‘Free Agent,’ Thriller Exploring Cuban Baseball’s High-Stakes Pursuit Of The American Dream

Antonio Negret will direct the feature from Oscar-winning “BlacKkKlansman” screenwriters Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz.
Michael Peña and Anthony Ramos are teaming for Free Agent, a fact-based thriller that moves beyond the baseball diamond into the dangerous business surrounding Cuban players’ pursuit of careers in the United States.
Peña will portray sports agent Bartolo “Bart” Hernandez, with Ramos playing Julio Estrada. According to Deadline’s casting report, the story follows the pair as their work with Cuban athletes draws them into organized crime, corruption and the political tensions between Cuba and the U.S.
Colombian filmmaker Antonio Negret is attached to direct from a screenplay by Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz, whose work on BlacKkKlansman earned them an Academy Award. The script previously appeared on the 2018 Black List under the title Bolsa Negra.
The project also reunites the writers with BlacKkKlansman producers Shaun Redick and Yvette Yates Redick of Impossible Dream Entertainment. Roberto Urbina, Jason Cherubini and Martin Ramos of Colombia’s Synestesys are producing alongside them.
The premise positions Free Agent at the intersection of sports ambition and a much darker international trade. Its central figures’ real-life activities ultimately led to convictions in Miami federal court, giving the film a South Florida connection as well as a story about the consequences of pursuing opportunity across borders.
Ramos offered an enthusiastic endorsement when sharing the casting announcement on Instagram, describing the screenplay as among the best he has read and celebrating the opportunity to make a movie about his favorite sport alongside Peña.
For the two actors, the material offers a partnership built around complicated protagonists: men operating between athletes’ ambitions, the business of professional baseball and the forces controlling access to it. How the film balances those aspirations against the consequences of their actions will be central to its dramatic weight.
A release date and production schedule have not yet been announced.
