Danny Ramirez Is Coming Home: Miami-Raised Star Joins ‘Miami Vice ’85’ With Austin Butler & Michael B. Jordan

MIAMI — Miami Vice ’85 is adding some genuine Miami DNA to its increasingly star-packed cast.

the Danny Ramirez Miami Vice, the Miami-raised actor whose credits include Top Gun: Maverick, Captain America: Brave New World and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, has joined Universal Pictures’ new big-screen take on the iconic crime franchise.

For Ramirez, the casting carries a particularly personal connection. After news of his involvement broke, the actor celebrated on Instagram with a simple message: “I’m coming home.”

Ramirez joins Austin Butler, who will step into the role of James “Sonny” Crockett, and Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs — the legendary undercover detectives originally played by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the NBC series that helped redefine Miami’s image around the world during the 1980s.

Details surrounding Ramirez’s character are being kept under wraps.

Joseph Kosinski, the filmmaker behind Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is directing Miami Vice ’85, which will revisit the glamour, danger and corruption of mid-1980s Miami. The story takes inspiration from the original series’ 1984 pilot, “Brother’s Keeper,” which introduced Crockett and Tubbs and established the neon-soaked style that became synonymous with the franchise.

The growing ensemble also includes Camila Morrone, Alden Ehrenreich and Whitney Peak.

For Miami audiences, however, Ramirez’s addition may be one of the project’s most meaningful casting moves yet. The actor was raised in South Florida and attended Miami Coral Park Senior High School before launching a Hollywood career that has taken him from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Top Gun.

Now, one of Miami’s own is returning to the city — this time for one of the most distinctly Miami stories Hollywood has ever produced.

Miami Vice ’85 is being designed for IMAX, with production expected to begin later this year. Universal has currently scheduled the film for May 19, 2028.
