Celia Cruz To Be Honored With Miami Park & Colorful Public Sculpture

MIAMI — Celia Cruz, the Cuban-born singer whose voice helped carry salsa around the world, is set to receive a lasting tribute in Miami through a planned park bearing her name and a public sculpture celebrating her unmistakable stage presence.
Announced during a community celebration, the project would honor an artist whose influence stretches across generations and national borders, connecting audiences through music, cultural pride and her signature cry of “¡Azúcar!”
An early rendering displayed at the event depicts Cruz with her arms outstretched in a flowing, multicolored gown adorned with tropical flowers and sweeping patterns. The presentation identifies Alex Kauffman as the artist and notes that the conceptual design remains subject to change.

The initiative brings together Miami Commissioner Ralph “Rafael” Rosado, Kiwanis of Little Havana, Miami-Dade Commissioner Rolando Escalona and Cruz’s longtime manager, Omer Pardillo-Cid, according to the announcement accompanying the presentation.
The Miami setting carries particular significance. A major center of Cuban-American life and the Latin entertainment industry, the city has long provided a cultural home for artists and audiences whose connections extend throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
Cruz’s own journey reflects that international reach. She became a star with Cuba’s La Sonora Matancera before leaving the island in 1960 and building a career that helped establish salsa as a global musical force. Her work with figures including Johnny Pacheco and Willie Colón placed her at the heart of the genre’s expansion.
Known as the Queen of Salsa, Cruz combined a commanding voice with exuberant performances, elaborate costumes and a direct connection with her audience. Songs including “La Vida Es Un Carnaval” and “La Negra Tiene Tumbao” introduced her to new generations, extending her popularity well into the later years of her career. She died in 2003.
The proposed artwork draws on that visual legacy. Its open-armed figure and vibrant dress evoke the energy of a performer whose image became nearly as recognizable as her voice.
Celia Cruz Sculpture will be by artist Alex Kauffman.
For international fans, the planned park would offer a place to encounter that legacy beyond recordings and concert footage—a public tribute to an artist who remains a defining figure in Latin music.
An opening date, installation timetable and final sculpture specifications were not included in the announcement materials.
